Star Wars: Phantom Menace 3D was released in February last year.  Converted by over 1000 Prime Focus rotoscope artists, it was expected to be the first of all six Star Wars movies to be converted and re-released. However, it didn’t do very well at the box office and the 3D was criticised for being too subtle although the pod-racing sequence was enjoyed by many who watched it.

The success of the 3D re-release of The Lion King, led studios to believe it was an easy quick buck but since then, movies such as Finding Nemo and Beauty and the Beast have done less well.

The news may come at a surprise to the guests at the Star Wars Celebration VI conference in August who were treated to a first look of the second conversion – Star Wars Episode 2: Attack of the Clones.

It has not been confirmed whether Star Wars: Episode VII will be released in 3D but most expect it will be.

3D fans of classics still have Top Gun 3D to look forward to as well as a range of titles from Lionsgate including The Descent.  Jurassic Park 3D will be released in April but Fox have cancelled plans to release Independence Day 3D this summer.
