Savannah Film Festival goes 3D | Savannah Now

September 28, 2012

A new partnership announced today between the Savannah College of Art and Design and RealD Inc., a leading global licensor of cinematic 3D technologies, means some of next month’s screenings at the 15th annual festival will jump right off the Trustees Theater screen.

It also paves the way for students to use 3D technology in the classroom. The company will provide SCAD with its patented 3D lens and glasses for use in the Oct. 27 through Nov. 3 festival and going forward.

“This partnership with RealD will make SCAD one of the only universities teaching 3D filmmaking, either in film or animation, from concept to projection on the world’s most widely used 3D cinema technology,” said Danny Filson, the festival’s executive director.

The increasingly popular technology, once abandoned as obsolete, has reshaped Hollywood, launching movies such as “The Avengers” and Pixar’s “Brave” to the top of the box office this year. It’s also spawned some creative applications — for example, the remaking of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s American classic “The Great Gatsby” as a Warner Bros. 3D extravaganza, now slated for 2013.

What role it will play at the Savannah festival remains a mystery.

“As far as this year’s festival, you’ll have to wait and see,” Filson said. “3D has risen in rank outside of the major blockbuster, from ‘Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away,’ which showcases stage production in a 3D environment, to ‘Katy Perry: Part of Me,’ a 3D representation of a Katy Perry concert.

“More and more, the film industry is looking for people who understand not only the technology, but who also can create with it, which is why we wanted to bring this opportunity to our students and our audiences.”

“We’re thrilled to be helping the next generation of filmmakers as they explore new ways to tell a story,” said Joseph Peixoto, RealD’s president of Worldwide Cinema. “These students are at the forefront of this new medium, and I’m excited to witness what they do with it in the future.”

This year’s featured films and celebrity honorees are expected to be announced next week. The 2011 honorees included actors Alec Baldwin and Lily Tomlin and director Oliver Stone.

Festival tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. Oct. 1 at savannahboxoffice.com.
