South Korean operator uses LTE Advanced to integrate 3D broadcasting and 4G technologies

South Korean operator SK Telecom has announced a field trial of using LTE to broadcast 3D images in an opening ceremony of its 3D Media Lab in Sangamdong, near Seoul.

SK Telecom told the Korea Herald that this demonstration marks the first time the company has incorporated 3D broadcasting technology with LTE network technology.

A SK Telecom official told the Korea Herald: “SK Telecom’s LTE 2.0 operations made it possible for two technologies to integrate.” The company said that it will likely to make LTE Advanced commercially feasible in 2013.

The operator and SBS Artech — owned by Seoul Broadcasting System — formed a consortium in 2011 to create the 3D Media Lab for developing and promoting 3D broadcasting and telecoms technologies.
