Is HBO’s future in standalone streaming?

June 11, 2012

A blog post from PandoDaily posits that HBO will “break free” from cable sometime in the next five years. On paper, the rationale makes complete sense. In reality, as long as HBO operates under Time Warner, the chances of TWX disaggregating their premier cable channel from their less popular “package” channels would seem unlikely.

It’s my understanding that HBO provides TWX with significant leverage to ensure that cable co’s are required to carry their other, less popular channels. Similar case with ESPN and Disney. Either way – there’s no doubt that content distribution is increasingly shifting away from MSOs and DBS’s  and onto mobile and wi-fi networks.

My question is…can these networks handle the additional traffic?

What do you think?
